New Folder Here

One of the common annoyances of Windows is that creating a new folder requires a trip to the 'New' menu, and a wait while all the 'New' items are loaded. New Folder Here speeds things up by providing the same option in a more accessible way. Just right-click the window or desktop background, or a folder, and choose New Folder Here. Enter a name for the folder in the prompt dialog that appears, and a new folder with that name will be created (if it doesn't already exist). If you selected a folder, the new folder will be created inside the selected folder.

New Folder Here also has several extra advantages over the usual method:

  • Like most ShellToys tools, you can assign a hotkey to this tool such as Ctrl+F. Whenever you need a new folder, just press that key combination and type a name.

  • If you select multiple folders and choose New Folder Here, a new folder with your chosen name will be created inside each of the selected folders (if it doesn't already exist there).

  • You can created nested folders by including \ characters. For example, if you enter Docs\Letters as the folder name, a folder named Docs will be created in the current folder (or each of the selected folders), with a subfolder named Letters inside that.

  • You can open the new folder instantly on creation: press Ctrl+Enter (or click OK with the Ctrl key pressed) in the dialog to create the new folder and open it in the current window, or use Shift to open it in a new window.

  • You can apply a Folder Color preset to new folders as they're created.
